A plot with a derelict convent was the recommended site for this small student accommodation project - its courtyard provided an opportunity to place a series of bedrooms and a social space at first floor level. My aim was to maintain the crumbling nature of the convent, so my intervention does not touch the existing walls; clean edges and metal cladding and structure exaggerate the distinction between old and new. This project was awarded the Design Prize in an internal competition.
